Location:
Anzère is perched on a sunny plateau at an altitude of 1,500 m, overlooking the Rhône Valley. Sion, the canton’s capital, is just 15 km away. Anzère was founded in the 1960s. A winter sports resort offering superb views of the Rhône Valley and the Valais Alps, it is also a magnificent hiking destination in the summer, with trails along historic irrigation channels.
Anzère is located in the municipality of Ayent, in Central Valais, at the foot of the Wildhorn massif, nestled among larch and fir forests, and enjoys an almost Mediterranean microclimate.
This resort is still relatively young; before 1960, it consisted of only five small chalets. Its prime location has led to rapid growth, and as a result, Anzère has become a modern yet intimate vacation village. In the surrounding area, there are still many mayens—rudimentary alpine dwellings made of stone or sun-baked wood.
In the Ayent-Anzère region, which enjoys a south-facing exposure and has some of the lowest rainfall in Switzerland, farmers have built numerous bisses—irrigation canals typical of the Valais. Three main bisses, totaling 70 km in length, run through the municipality. The earliest bisses date back to the mid-15th century.
