Sierre is a small sun-kissed Valais town, pleasantly nestled in the middle of several hills and surrounded by vineyards. Viticulture and agriculture are important here. Sierre is also an ideal starting point for many excursions due to its central location.
Sierre is particularly distinguished by its location between the Upper and Lower Valais, at the crossroads of the linguistic borders of German and French. The Romans called it “The city of a hundred hills”. On one of these hills, castles and fortresses were built, which were soon surrounded by hamlets that over the years grew into the town of Sierre. The richly decorated town hall and the picturesque Bourg street, lined with historic buildings including the parish church of Sainte-Catherine, form the heart of the town.
Many artists have been attracted by the location and cultural capital of the town. The most famous of them was probably Rainer Maria Rilke, who loved the town and its advantages so much that he made it his home from 1921 until his death in 1926. A museum is dedicated to this German-speaking writer.
The area around Sierre is one of the most important wine-growing regions in Switzerland. Fendant, made from the Chasselas white grape variety, is one of the most famous ambassadors of the Valais. Its equivalent among red wines is Dôle, made mainly from Pinot Noir. The wine trail that connects the two sites of the Valais Museum of Vine and Wine provides visitors with detailed information about the region’s fine wines.
For an evening trip to the source of our authentic flavors, the Restaurant and Oenotheque of the Château de Villa in Sierre is the ideal place. The oenotheque brings together more than 102 Valais wine growers, offering a choice of 640 different labels! The restaurant is the place to taste the Valais Raclette and other flavors of our region.
